Sunlite LED UV Blacklight A19 Light Bulb Review and Comparison
Back from quasi-retirement to compare blacklights of various sorts, with a new affordable 365 nm LED UV blacklight by Sunlite.
Screws into a standard Edison light bulb socket, low heat output, low visible light output and low power consumption. Best of all, its a real, honest to goodness longwave blacklight.
I appear to be into other strange things as well...

    Yeah, I recently bought one of those 75w incandescent black light bulbs to see if anything has changed with them, and notta. Did just buy a Wal-Mart brand LED Black Light A19 60w equivalent and got similar results to the first LED in this video where some just don't pop with that light.

    So to get the real black light effect, we need to look for CCF lights with high long wave output? Like for currency testing and making goofy novelty items fluoresce? I bought some alleged black light LED lamps to finish out an order of other LEDs I was buying to modernize the various lighting in a car I had ten years ago and I was unimpressed. Like, you know the "loser horn" sound from The Price Is Right? I heard that playing in my mind when I first fired one up with a 4.7k ohm resistor (viva la resistor!) in series with that light emitting bastard and brought various fluorescent items near it. They didn't fluoresce, but I personally was incandescent - with rage. It really hurt my feelings. And those things were only like a buck a piece, whereas these CCF toobz can be a little pricey. Anyway, I should look for long wave UV output, right? I sense that the lighting industry doesn't really even care about my feelings, despite what the documentation for those LEDs said in broken English - "We care very high about customer feeling and satisfaction." I was big sad for long time.

    I think a dimmer switch adapter to slow down the fan would allow for a slower flicker effect. But I think you would lose brightness as well. They could probably be hacked to have an independent switch for the light and fan.

    365nm LED, although expensive, delivers the best result. With a caveat, they emit a LOT of purple light. You will want to use a special blacklight filter in conjunction with the 365nm LED. I have assembled a true blacklight flashlight out of Convoy S2 flashlight host, along with both 20mm diameter ZWB2 visible light blocking blacklight filter and a powerful Nichia NVSU233A-U365 365nm LED. It have light up my Wildfire blacklight paint sampler like a christmas tree, too bright to look at the fluorescence when the flashlight's at the point-blank. Black paint's perfect with purple light filtered out.

    I painted over the majority of the blue LEDs because they were WAY too bright. My flames are more amber now and less pink. That was my main gripe with these. The blue LEDs completely KILL the effect.

    Hi. Sounds great. Could you let me know the highest note this plays? I just bought the cedar D bass and I wasn't sure how much time I should be spending trying to produce a note over the higher open D. I can eek out the E just above by covering a few holes and blowing slightly harder and a slightly flat F above that but E is the highest note I can achieve. Is that all I should be aiming for? Less? Thanks

    • @Uraniumdj
      @Uraniumdj 8 років тому

      +Cosmo Spacemonkey I've been able to coax out the higher E and F, but you have to use just the right amount of breath. The F is really fugitive, so I never use it. It seems to work best when the flute has been warmed up a little by your breath, but before condensation builds too much. On the plus side, the flute nearly chromatic with alternative fingering, especially if you can half-hole the lower E you can get a lot more mileage out of it.

    *Note* in your LED vs. tube blacklight video, you had the same polka dot sort of orange fluorescent vase, but you said it was cadmium rather than manganese. Which is it?

    • @Uraniumdj
      @Uraniumdj 8 років тому

      +Cooper Gates As far as I can tell from research, its both. Cadmium will create different shades of red, orange or yellow depending with varying opacity depending on what else is in the glass. Manganese is used as a clarifying agent to remove green from iron contamination, or as a colorant in its own right (on its own high concentrations make a deep purple glass). Manganese and cadmium (to the best of my knowledge, as opinions seem to vary and expertise is hard to gauge) together yield brilliantly florescent yellow and orange glass with a wide absorption spectrum, while manganese without cadmium produces a sickly yellowish or greenish glow under 365 nm. I've seen the "sickly" glow in glass ranging from clear to deep blue. I am a hobbyist and not an expert, so anything I said above, aside from direct observation of visible phenomena, may be dead wrong. Don't use me as a source for a doctoral thesis or anything important :)

      +giscotn Are you updating your original Echo Bar/fluorescent tube blacklight video, since you removed it? I enjoyed the Blu-ray laser (405 nm) and one of those in the range of 30-50 mW would be pretty darn cool. I think lasers in true UV down to around 360 nm would be a lot spendier / rarer.

    Thanks for the video. Quick question...How far does the IR remote reach?

    • @Uraniumdj
      @Uraniumdj 9 років тому

      musicmaestrodj I found the range to be disappointing. The IR sensor is located on the face of the fixture with the LEDs, so the remote doesn't work reliably if you are behind the fixtures or if they are being used as uplights. I've mostly used them as static uplights, but I did use the remoteat a New Years gig. It didn't seem very effective beyond 10 feet. Maybe I just have a bad remote and unluckily picked it out of the four remotes at my disposal, but that seems unlikely.
